Laura Siegemund defies all odds to emerge victorious
It was an epic battle at Court 3 as Laura Siegemund locked horns with a 29-year-old Russian in her first-round match. The former World No.5 did exceedingly well to claim the first set 6-2. However, Ekaterina Alexadrova made a comeback in the next set and clinched it 6-3 to level the scores.
It all came down to the third and deciding set. While the first two sets were one-sided for both players, the third set saw some long rallies. Both Siegemund and Alexandrova seemed in no mood to gift any points to their opponents. This resulted in the set entering a tiebreaker.
Even in the tiebreaker, Siegemund found it tough to score points as Alexandrova was prompt with her returns. After several long rallies, Siegemund found an opportunity to take the lead and win the tiebreaker 11-9. As soon as the 35-year-old hit the winning shot, she was roaring in delight.
Laura Siegemund will next face Storm Hunter in the second round. The two players will be up against each other for the first time and hence it will be an interesting battle. Hunter is coming on the back of a clinical win against Sara Errani in the first round.
