Coco Gauff defeated German tennis player Laura Siegemund in the first round of the ongoing 2023 US Open, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The sixth seed is one of the favorites in the tournament, and being an American, she will obviously get all the crowd support.
However, Laura Siegemund is of the opinion that the pro-Coco Gauff crowd insulted her a bit too much during and after the match, and she is deeply saddened by it.
“I am very, very disappointed with the way the people treated me today. I am a fighter, I never did anything against the audience. I stayed calm. I never made not even a gesture against the audience.”
Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added, “And they had no respect for me. They treated me bad. They treated me like I was a cheater. Like I was trying sneaky ways to win this match or something. They treated me like I was a bad person.” she said.
Laura conceded to the fact that she is slow, and thus she keeps getting time violations. She agreed that she should be a lot quicker, but after all, this is how she plays. She does it for herself and not for her opponent. The crowd clapped when she missed the first serve, and she was deeply upset because of that.
Although Laura won the first set of the match, Coco Gauff quickly came back into the match and won the remaining two sets to take home the win. The German said that she was disappointed by the match result, but more so, she was upset by how the crowd treated her.
Coco Gauff is set to face Mirra Andreeva in Round 2 of US Open 2023
Sixth seed Coco Gauff will now face Mirra Andreeva in Round 2 of her US Open 2023 campaign. Both these young players (Coco Gauff is 19 years old and Mirra Andreeva is just 16 years old) will battle it out for a place in the third round of the US Open.
Coco Gauff, as mentioned earlier, is the favorite to win the 2023 US Open as she is the popular ‘home girl’ of the tournament. She has yet to win a Grand Slam, and this might be her first if she is able to do so. However, to do that, she will have to overcome immensely tough opponents like Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, and Aryna Sabalenka, to name a few.
