With the Cincinnati Masters done and dusted, it’s time to move to the bigger event as the seeds for the US Open 2023 are out. The final Grand Slam event of the calendar starts on the 28th of August. The world number one and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is unsurprisingly the top seed heading into the tournament. The young Spaniard has added another Grand Slam title to his name since winning last year’s US Open.
23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is the second seed for the tournament. The Serbian legend has won three titles at the US Open. Djokovic made a return to the US after two years at the Cincinnati Masters. The Serb has underperformed to an extent at the US Open despite it being a hard-court tournament. The second seed will look forward to winning a record-extending 24th Grand Slam at the Flushing Meadows.
Former tournament Champion and one of the favorites, Daniil Medvedev, is the third seed for the tournament. Meanwhile, the 2020 champion Dominic Thiem is unseeded for the tournament. Last year’s finalist Casper Ruud is the fifth seed for the tournament. Jannik Sinner, the dark horse for the title, is seeded 6th. The list of the seeds is as follows:
Carlos Alcaraz will head into the tournament as the favorite. The first seed has shown extraordinary resilience in the Cincinnati Masters. Despite not being at his best, the Spaniard has managed to scrape wins. Djokovic would be the close second favorite, way ahead of the rest of the seeded players.
US Open 2023: Rafael Nadal heads the list of absentees
Rafael Nadal will be the most prominent absentee from the upcoming US Open. Nadal is still recovering from hip surgery. After exiting the Australian Open early, the Spaniard has not made a single Grand Slam appearance. Nadal’s withdrawal from the French Open meant he dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since 2003.
Another headline absentee from the final Grand Slam of the year is Nick Kyrgios. Kyrgios is recovering from a wrist injury and announced his withdrawal last week. Pablo Carreño Busta, Reilly Opelka, Marin Cilic and Denis Shapovalov will also not feature at Flushing Meadows.
Big-serving American John Isner as well as Steve Johnson and Michael Mmoh are among the wildcards in the men’s draw. 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori, 2016 Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic, as well as Gael Monfils, have used their protected rankings to enter the tournament.
