The much-awaited Davis Cup has officially come to an end, with Team Italy winning the tournament by beating mighty Australia in the finals. Following another heartfelt loss in the finals of the Davis Cup for the second time in a row, Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt voices his frustration with the Davis Cup organizers.
The captain of Australia reveals that he is sick and tired of the same old format of the tournament and hopes that the organizers will bring back the same old format that includes home and away matches as well as the best of five games.
Their hands are tied. There's no home-and-away and there's no five sets, so it's not ideal. We are playing on a surface that, yeah, I'm really sick of playing on, to be honest. That's not what Davis Cup is about. It's playing on clay, grass, outdoor elements. You know, there's a lot of different things.Lleyton Hewitt said
This is the second time in a row that Australia has lost in the Davis Cup finals. Exactly 12 months after their loss to Canada, the team was eager for redemption but faced the wrath of Sinner, who saw his country win its first title since 1976.
Lleyton Hewitt expressed his frustration over not having an ideal Davis Cup
The Davis Cup is one of the biggest tournaments, where all the countries play each other to win the final title. Usually, the tournament is played on various courts, like grass and hard courts.
However, since the format changed, players have not been happy with the tournament. After the recent Davis Cup finals loss, Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt expressed his frustration over the organizers during a press conference.
He said:
Yeah, it's obviously pretty frustrating, I think, that we don't get all the different surfaces and conditions throughout Davis Cup anymore, and especially in the big matches, as well..
After a successful week in Malaga, the Australian team fell short of Jannik Sinner and the dominating Italian team. He took this opportunity to blast the organizers and hoped that the organizers would reconsider the current format and make changes accordingly.
While there have been no official statements, it remains to be seen if the players’ prayers will be heard by the officials.
