World No.9 Maria Sakkari has interestingly said that she was not aware that her emotional breakdown at the post-match press conference after the US Open exit was being recorded. The Greek tennis ace who bowed out of the year’s last Grand Slam after losing in the opening round burst into tears during her press conference.

Sakkari cried inconsolably and also said that she was not clear about what she was going to do now. The 28-year-old had said that she would consider taking a break as she has been suffering on the pitch. Now, as the tournament is done and dusted, Sakkari opened about her horror show at the Flushing Meadows

The Greek talked about her first-round exit and also revealed how people back home reached out to her after seeing that video. Sakkari then said that these messages of support helped her think clearly and decide that she would continue to play the game. “I didn’t know it was being recorded. I didn’t know it was going to get as big as it got, especially back home,” the Greek said to San Diego Press.

“The amount of messages, love, & support from people back home & from a lot of my colleagues was very nice. I’m very thankful that I have people on the tour who support me like that. That was the main reason why I decided I want to keep going,” said Sakkari.

Maria Sakkari has not had a great year so far in 2023. The Greek tennis ace has not won a single title despite featuring in as many as 17 tournaments. Sakkari has a first-round exit in three of the four Grand Slams (US Open, Wimbledon, and French Open). At the Australia Open, she managed to survive till the third round.

Her best performance so far has been at the Washington Open where the 28-year-old qualified for the final before losing to reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff. Sakkari has made it into five semifinals (Indian Wells, Qatar Open, Austria Open, Madrid Open, and Germany Open) but has failed to secure a trophy.

Nevertheless, as the San Diego Open kicked off on Monday and Sakkari has entered the tournament as the third seed, the Greek ace will have a chance to win her first title of the year. However, it won’t be easy considering the likes of Jelena Ostapenko, Ons Jabeur, and Belinda Bencic are also taking part in the WTA 500 tournament.
