Maria Sakkari had a fantastic season but she did not win any trophies to show for it. She started her season by participating in the Australian Open but unfortunately lost to Jessica Pegula in the fourth round. She played in the Championship match of both the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy and Doha Open but lost both matches to Anett Kontaveit and Iga Swiatek respectively.

She reached her third final, this season, after defeating Katerina Siniakova, Petra Kvitova, Daria Saville, Elena Rybakina, and Paula Badosa. But again, Iga Swiatek beat her. However, these performances propelled her to World No.3 rank.

The Greek could not do much in both the French Open or Wimbledon as she was knocked out of both tournaments in the second and third rounds respectively. She played her fourth final in the 2022 Emilia-Romagna Open where she was defeated by Mayar Sherif. The tennis sensation then played in the final of the Guadalajara Open but again lost to none other than Jessica Pegula.

Despite all the obstacles, her rankings helped her to qualify for the 2022 WTA Finals. She won all her Group stage matches by defeating Jessica Pegula, Aryna Sabalenka, and Ons Jabeur. However, she lost to eventual champion Caroline Garcia in the semi-final round of the tournament.
