One of the very best in women’s tennis, Greek star Maria Sakkari was expected to make it really big at the 2023 US Open considering what a brilliant hard-court player she is. She was up against World No. 71 Spaniard Rebeka Masarova, with all eyes on the Greek to make it to the second round easily. She fumbled very badly during the match, losing the match in straight sets by a scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, leaving the entire tennis world absolutely shocked.
She looked distraught after the match and couldn’t hold back her tears during the post-match press conference. While answering the media, it was evident that Maria found it really hard to keep herself stable. To lose against a much inferior opponent in the very first round is one thing but failing to give her opponent any competition during the course of the match summed up what a hard day it was for the Greek.
The entire tennis world consoled her through their heartfelt messages on social media standing beside her in this tough time. She thanked the fans with a message on Instagram a few minutes ago. The message read, “I really have no words to describe the love and support I’ve received the last 48h. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to realise simple things in life. I just want to say thank you to each one of you for inspiring me to keep going and get back to enjoying myself. Don’t forget to love yourself.”
What according to Maria Sakkari went wrong during the match?

Maria Sakkari has been in a woeful form for the last couple of tournaments and the US Open was a chance for her to amend her previous mistakes which she bottled shockingly. She lost the Citi Open final to Coco Gauff and since then she has lost her footing really badly. First a first-round exit at the Canadian Open, then a second-round knockout at the Cincinnati, and now again a first-round exit at the US Open.
Even Maria held her last two defeats accountable for her early exit at the US Open. At the post-match conference, she said, “Definitely the two previous defeats played a role, I was very nervous, I don’t know what I’m going to do, I really don’t know, it’s always the same. Maybe I should take a break, I’m suffering on the court. I can’t make a decision now, it’s hard. I don’t have a clear mind.”
