Serena Williams announced her retirement from the tennis world in August and played her final matches at the 2022 US Open. She received a warm and emotional farewell after her third-round defeat against Ajla Tomljanovic as she has created her own legacy in her career that lasted nearly three decades and has been inspiring millions of people around the world.

Marion Bartoli, former French player, and one-time Grand Slam champion is sure of the fact that Serena Williams was much better than the current generation during her prime years. She compared Serena’s best performances with that of the 2022 US Open champion Iga Swiatek best performances. She said “For Serena at 40 years old to expect her to play at the same level as she was in her 20s, that’s not something we can realistically expect from her. When you put all of that in perspective, the best of Serena Williams will be better than the best of Iga Swiatek.

Serena Williams had announced her retirement in August stating about her final innings to be played at the Arthur Ashe stadium where she had won her first singles major title in 1999. She ended her career becoming the only player to win 23 singles Grand Slam titles in the Open era. She is hailed as one of the greatest female athletes in the world.

Even after having less practice time on the court and playing fewer matches going into her final tournament, she started on a good note and still played some good tennis showing utmost dominance in her matches against the current generation of young players and showing her capabilities even though not being in the fittest form. She had won just one of the four matches played in the build-up to the US Open.

She had made her comeback to the court at the grass-court season after a gap of twelve months due to an injury. She along with her sister Venus Williams are an undefeated pair in the finals of the doubles category at the Grand Slams and have won together 14 doubles Grand Slam titles and three Olympic gold medals.
