Mark Philippoussis compares the intellect and aggressiveness among his generation of players and the current generation

Mark Philippoussis, a former tennis player from Australia highlighted the key differences between the current and past eras. He drew comparisons on the basis of the mental strength of the players between the previous and current generations. He also happens to be the luxury consultant to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the moment.
Philippoussis led Team Australia to claim the Davis Cup trophy in 1999 and 2003. He retired after winning 11 ATP singles titles but could not win a Grand Slam. He criticized the mentality of the different generations of players on the Tour.
The former No 8 player claimed that during their era, players believed in apologizing first and would easily let off such things. But nowadays, things have changed and so as the dynamics between the players referring to the ugly spat that still prevails between the Greek player and Kyrgios.
During an interview, Mark Philippoussis said that “These guys are talented and amazing athletes, but, my God, they’re soft! When I had a short ball, I would go straight for the guy, always. You apologize and move on. Now it’s like you have to send an apology email, in addition to texts and Instagram posts. Go on, hit him again“

Philippoussis has been helping the World No 6 for some time and shares a good rapport since the former Australian is an integral part of his team since the 2022 US Open. He had claimed to be helping him to improve on his net game as the 2003 Wimbledon finalist believes Stef’s potential of playing great volleys.
Philippoussis had backed Tsitsipas in his battle with Kyrgios to win it if it was purely tennis vs tennis. But he also pointed out that the Greek has to find a way to manage out of such situations and focus on himself because such a thing will happen again in the future. He admitted that despite being mentally very strong, Tsitsipas lost his temper and will learn a lot from the game.
