Marketa Vondrousova won the Wimbledon women’s singles final, becoming the first unseeded player to do so. The Czech player faced last year’s runner-up, Ons Jabeur, beating her 6-4,6-4. Most of her family, including her husband and her sister, attended the final, possibly the biggest day in her career. However, her mother, Jindriska Anderlova, was nowhere to be seen. After the match, she spoke to the press.

“I was thinking about the finals we played in Berlin of doubles,” she said. “My mom was there watching, and she was so upset that we lost. She told me, ‘I don’t want to be second all the time.’ I said, ‘Okay, Mom, we’ll try today.’ But she said, ‘I’m not coming. I just want to watch TV.'” Vondrausova said that she was a bit nervous before the match, but she felt calm once she got on the court.

“I was just trying to put every ball into the play,” she said. “I mean, I was a bit nervous before. When we came onto the court, I was like, Okay, let’s see what’s going to happen. I didn’t start well.” She said that the atmosphere on Centre Court was very tough, but she was able to block out the noise and focus on her game.

“When it was 40-love, I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “I was just thinking to myself, ‘Just be over.’ I was so nervous. It was such a relief when I put the match point in.” Vondrausova said that she was proud of her achievement and that she was looking forward to celebrating with her family and friends. “This is a dream come true,” she said. “I can’t believe it.”

After her surprising victory over Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final, Marketa Vondrousova has exciting plans to celebrate. “I think I’m going to have some beer maybe. It was an exhausting two weeks, and I was getting myself together the last few days. I was so nervous before this game,” she said in the post-match interview.

Vondrousova already has a collection of tattoos on her arms, and now, she’s considering getting another one to celebrate her unforgettable time as the Wimbledon champion. She revealed that her coach, Jan Hernych, had made a pre-match pledge to get inked as well.

“I don’t know but I made a bet with my coach. He said if I win a Grand Slam he’s going to get one also. So I think we’re going to go tomorrow,”  she said. Marketa Vondrousova’s achievement at Wimbledon made her the first woman to reach two Grand Slam finals without being seeded. Her previous appearance in a Grand Slam final was at the French Open in 2019, where she lost to Ash Barty when she was just 19 years old.
