After a thrilling two weeks of tennis in south–west London, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova returned to her home city of Prague, Czech Republic. She was greeted by a sea of fans waiting to receive the new Wimbledon champion as she landed at the airport.
She addressed her fans and shared her experience at Wimbledon. On being asked about how did she manage to win the title, she said “You just have to believe in yourself.”
Having won the prestigious title at Wimbledon, while being unseeded additionally, Vondrousova has been treated like a hero back in her home country of the Czech Republic. She joins a long list of Czech Women’s tennis players who have excelled at the sport and brought laurels to the country. Marketa Vondrousova’s tattoos are one of the major talking points whenever she steps on the court.
Former Doubles No. 1 Rennae Stubbs made an observation of the same. Following Vondrousova’s Wimbledon victory, she tweeted, “The Czech Republic is the greatest female tennis country we’ve ever seen! Think about the population & size & the amount of great players it’s produced! Martina, Hana, Helena, Jana, Petra, Karolina, Barbora, Muchova, Marketa, Strycova! I could go on but u get my point!”
Marketa Vondrousova’s tough road to the title
Since the Czech Republican was unseeded in this tournament, Vondrousova faced a tougher draw than most other players. She faced players like Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic, Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, and previous–year runner-up Ons Jabeur during her title run. About her draw, Vondrousova remarked, “I saw the draw, it wasn’t so easy. I had Veronika, then I had Donna. They played amazing on grass the tournaments before. I was like, let’s try. Then I beat them in two sets. I was like, ‘Okay, maybe something can happen here.’ I think I was just open-minded.”
Her opponent, Ons Jabeur, lost a second consecutive Wimbledon final this year. Marketa herself, however, is all too familiar with finals heartbreak. She had won her only title back in 2017 in Biel, and had since finished runner–up thrice, with the most important (and heartbreaking) being her finals appearance at Roland Garros 2019. She lost to then No. 1 Ashleigh Barty there.
With the unlikely title victory, Vondrousova has skyrocketed from her No. 43 ranking to a career-best of World No. 10. She will hope to make the most of her current form and rack up as many titles as she can. Marketa Vondrousova’s husband is Stepan Simek, and the couple got married in 2022.
