Marketa Vondrousova said, “I’m not the underdog any more,” as she approaches yet another Grand Slam, the US Open 2023 as a Top-10 seed. The 24-year-old acknowledged that she is now an established member of the WTA Tour, who perfectly understands the pressure that accompanies this incredible achievement.

As per the Czech herself, the pressure that comes with every big tournament is a good thing, now that she is in the top 10. Furthermore, she also explained that she would be taking the tournament, match-by-match.

Referring to the other players on the Tour and explaining the need to take her emotion and focus on every match, Vondrousova continued, You have to take that and just focus on every match. They’re going to play some great shots because they have nothing to lose now.”

Starting with her Olympic silver medal at the Tokyo Summer Olympics, Vondrousova started making her mark in the tennis world. Following her title at Wimbledon 2023, she became the first unseeded champion that the Championships have seen. From there, everything went up for the Czech, as she reached a career-high ranking of World No. 9.

Vondrousova is keeping very low expectations for herself as she marches into the US Open Championship. “I feel like it’s just too much pressure for me if I think that, if I start think about it before tournament, or if I’m in the tournament,” she said as she tried to keep the growing expectations of her back.

While the Czech is happy that she has at least one Slam to speak for her, she also explained that this list might not be able to grow. She also reasoned that this lowered expectation might also help her in keeping her stress-free ahead of the US Open.

Vondrousova is seeded 9th in the US Open 2023. This will be the first time she is seeded in a Grand Slam, despite her title-clinching at Wimbledon, where she defeated 6th-seeded Ons Jabeur.
