World No. 4 Coco Gauff is into her maiden semi-finals at the Australian Open. The teen star was up against World No. 37 Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals. The two put on a splendid show at Rod Laver Arena, but it was the Americans’ day to clinch the win. 

With both players trying for their maiden semi-final qualification in Melbourne Park, it is Gauff who advances with a score of 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 6-2. The match lasted for over 3 hours and 8 minutes. Many felt the American made a lot of mistakes, and Kostyuk was the deserving winner.

But the scoreboard suggests differently and despite her best efforts, the Ukrainian has to bow out. It surely was a close encounter given Gauff progresses with a difference of mere 6 points between them. Kostyuk hit more aces (2v1), made fewer double faults (8v9), hit more winners(39-17), and also had more return winners(3v0).

Gauff, however, clutched in the unforced errors (51v56) and returned unforced errors (3v4), which eventually separated the two. While many can argue it was an ugly win for the reigning US Open champ, a win remains a win. 

She has been unbeaten this year so far, and a little luck factor isn’t undeserving of her. She has now reached the semis at all the Grand Slam events except Wimbledon. If she reaches the final, she will have made it to the finals in three of the four majors.

While the match was a testament to the individual capabilities of the two women, it was still marred by controversy. The Ukrainian’s husband, Heorhii Sudakov, was in the stands for the match cheering for his dear wife.

Donning a black t-shirt, goggles, and a cap, it was his headgear that got him in trouble. The cap had two coconuts along with the text ‘SHAKE YOUR COCOS’. Fans found it distasteful and rude given Kostyuk’s opponent was Coco Gauff.

One can only debate whether it was intentional or not, fans were certainly unhappy with the Ukrainian for his choice of cap.

Gauff will now await the winner of the clash between Barbora Krejcikova and Aryna Sabalenka to realize her semis opponent.

As for Kostyuk, she is likely to re-enter the Top-30 provided Linda Noskova and Anna Kalinskaya are unable to reach the semis too.
