Tennis legend Martina Navratilova recently tweeted an article on World Athletics striking back at accusatory claims by transgender players and representatives. Navratilova feels that all accusations on World Athletics are Bogus and have no credibility. She said, “Shame on them” for the athletes and committees opposing this decision.
World Athletics recently banned transgender athletes born as males from competing in elite women’s events. The ruling says that transgenders are not eligible to compete in the elite female category if they have experienced any part of male puberty either beyond Tanner Stage 2 or after age 12—whichever comes first. This has raised a lot of debate around the “Do male-to-female transgender athletes have any advantage over women athletes?” World Athletics claims.
This issue came to the fore recently when Lia Thomas stormed to victory in the women’s 500m freestyle NCAA swimming championships in the USA. Thomas, who had previously competed as a man, beat an Olympic silver medalist into second place in the women’s event. Ever since there have been discussions about whether trans women have higher testosterone levels.
Is it possible that they are at advantage due to greater size and strength gained after going through male puberty? Well, Martina Navratilova seems to agree that they might be advantageous.
It has also brought the issue of Title IX to focus. Title IX in the United States rule of law is a domestic legislation that has played an important role in gender equity in athletics and has prevented sexual harassment in college and other professional campuses.
Martina Navratilova feels this ban makes sense and all the accusatory claims should be absolved
A former wrestling coach named Hudson Taylor is completely against this ban. Newsweek reported he feels ‘World Athletics’ has given in to political pressure to take this decision. To which World Athletics responded by saying “We went through a comprehensive consultation process which made it clear that our stakeholders believed there was insufficient evidence that transwomen did not retain an advantage over biological women.”
Hudson Taylor also pointed out that there is S*x testing happening, which was also negated by World Athletics. This ben was taken by the World Athletics to protect Women in sports. But detractors believe it takes away the focus of other major challenges in women’s sports. Namely the unequal pay, abuse and harassment, lack of women in leadership, and inequities in resources for women athletes.
This claim on unequal play and inequities in resources was also completely rejected by World Athletics stating that athletics had parity in pay. When the World Athletics Championships prize money was introduced it was equal for Men and Women. Regarding abuse and harassment, Word Athletics has a staunch Safeguarding policy that is complied with by all nations.
Martina Navratilova‘s post reflects though she is all about the LGBTQ, she also believes in Sports Federations and Authorities. Her vote goes with the authorities trying to safeguard sportsmen across the world.
