In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old man stripped naked in front of two 14-year-old girls in the women’s changing room of the Vernon Aquatic Centre in Canada and donned a woman’s bathing suit. After Bill C-16 was passed, the Canadian Human Rights Act was amended, adding gender identity and gender expression to the list of grounds of discrimination that are prohibited. Surprisingly, this makes the act of the 50-year-old legal. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has spoken out against the incident as well.
The uncle of one of the girls said (Source: Castanet):
My niece had a 50-year-old man come into the change room, strip naked in front of her and her friend, she’s 14, and put on a woman’s bathing suit and go out.The uncle of one of the girls said
Upon trying to inquire and complain about the incident, he was shocked to learn from the pool’s manager that the girls had no rights and that the transgender person’s rights prevailed over those of the girls. The uncle, Kevin, said that he deems it necessary for parents to know this.
City Spokesperson Carolyn Baldridge said that the staff are not allowed to ask a person to leave a changing room and that anyone can choose the changing room of either gender based on their choice.
She said:
It is against the law for Vernon Recreation staff to dictate what washroom/change room that a customer can use based on their appearance. Staff cannot ask someone to leave for changing in the change room of their choice.City Spokesperson Carolyn Baldridge said
Martina Navratilova urges that the matter be looked into
Tennis legend Martina Navratilova is always very vocal about social issues on X and she is strongly against transgender people exploiting their rights and playing with technicality. She has openly voiced her opinions against the participation of trans women in women’s sports for a long time now.
She wrote on X while sharing an article about the incident:
This has to stop. This is not ok.Martina Navratilova on X
The replies to her tweet were filled with concerns from equally worried citizens. Many fans pointed out that the Canadians had voted for this and that it was bound to happen when Bill C-16 received Royal Assent.
Almost all the tweets agreed that this is not accepted and that the rules need to be amended lest situations like these become a mainstay in society. Currently, there are talks of a possible public n*dity and indecent acts case against the man.
