Martina Navratilova has voiced her opinion against legalizing guns for US citizens following the horrific mass shooting incident in Maine. Navratilova was left in disbelief about the fact that people still want possession of firearms to be legal despite so many killings and mass shootings. The former tennis was left shocked at the incident that took place on the evening of 26 October in Maine.
Notably, a man in his 30s came out on the streets of Lewiston, Maine, and opened fire at citizens. This resulted in at least 18 deaths and more than 60 people getting injured. The police are still searching for the suspect who is believed to be Robert Card, a firearms instructor in the US Army Reserve who was recently discharged from a mental health facility after reporting hallucinations.
This horrific incident led to an outpour of emotions from everyone and Martina Navratilova who is vocal about everything was no exception. The former World No.1 player questioned the need to own firearms and also shamed those who want it to be legal despite so many such mass shooting incidents in the recent past.
So one guy who goes off his mind kills and injures dozens of victims, shuts down a whole state, terrifies millions, all because he has a weapon of war and more that he is using and killing with and people are still wanting to keep these weapons legal????? WTAF????Martina Navratilova posted on X.
Now, coming to the suspect, Robert Card, he is being chased by the police. However, there has been no concrete update about his whereabouts. A few media houses report that the suspect might be lying somewhere dead.
Mass shooting incidents on the rise in the USA
Martina Navratilova might be right in calling out the legalization of guns as mass shooting incidents are on the rise in the USA. The Maine mass shooting incident was the 565th such incident in 2023. The numbers show that such incidents have increased 1.5 times since 2020. While 417 mass shooting incidents took place in 2019, 610 such incidents took place in 2020. It went to a massive 690 in 2021.
While there are many reasons behind such incidents, possession of guns by citizens looks like the prime cause. And hence, the former tennis ace might not be wrong in calling out such policies. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the government scraps this policy or if 2023 touches a new high in terms of the number of mass shooting incidents in a year.
