Former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova has asked the tennis world’s biggest question once again, “Where is Peng Shuai?” Peng Shuai, the former Doubles World No. 1 had accused China’s former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of years of sexual assault before disappearing and reappearing mysteriously.
China and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have shut the case from their end but the WTA and tennis fans haven’t accepted their ‘proof’ of Peng’s safety. The topic, however, came up as China opened its congress for the first time since the Pandemic where Gaoli was also seen in attendance.
Replying to a tagged tweet, Navratilova tweeted, “Where is Peng Shuai? I don’t think she will ever have the opportunity to play again, unfortunately #WhereIsPengShuai.”
Tennis fans unite with Martina Navratilova to show support for Peng Shuai
Prior to the 2022 Beijing Olympics, the IOC along with the Chinese government allowed L’Equipe to take an interview of Shuai. In the interview, the player denied all the accusations that she had first made and asked for privacy instead hinting at no signs of a return to tennis.
When the WTA however approached to have a word with Shuai, they were refused any dialogue with the player. Steve Simon-led WTA has since then held its ground on not conducting any event in China. The ATP had also made a similar statement but had added the events back on their calendars.
However, they removed the tournaments once again after receiving a lot of flak from tennis players and fans. Navratilova‘s recent tweet again saw fans hope for the well-being of the player and the inaction of the Chinese government to protect the politician.
