Tennis legend Martina Navratilova recently tweeted her disgust with Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith’s endorsement of former President Donald Trump‘s 2024 presidential campaign. Hyde-Smith’s endorsement came just hours before Trump’s arraignment in New York over hush money payments to an adult film star. In her statement, Hyde-Smith cited Trump’s policies as a reason to support him again, without mentioning Trump’s unprecedented efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat and the violent Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol that followed.

Navratilova’s tweet condemned Hyde-Smith’s statement, which alleged that the prosecution of Trump was a “political stunt” and had “nothing to do with justice.” She also criticized Hyde-Smith for repeating “debunked lies about Bragg and Soros,” referring to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who indicted Trump, and billionaire philanthropist George Soros, whom many Republicans have accused of funding left-wing political campaigns.

While Hyde-Smith is the sixth GOP senator to back Trump’s bid for another White House term, most top Senate Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Minority Whip John Thune, have stayed silent about Trump’s indictment. Sen. Bill Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial after the Jan. 6 riot, called the indictment a “politically motivated prosecution by a far-left activist.” He added that the indictment would lead to “political theater” that would distract from the issues.

Navratilova’s tweet reflects a growing trend among celebrities and public figures who are using social media to express their political views and speak out against injustice. As a lesbian and an activist for LGBTQ+ rights, Navratilova has long been involved in social and political causes, including the fight against discrimination and the promotion of equality. Her tweet is just one example of how celebrities are using their platform to raise awareness about important issues and inspire social change.
