Despite the complicated politics of the issue, Governor DeSantis signed the six-week ban, which will end Florida’s long-held role as a destination for women from across the Deep South seeking abortions. It will now force women to travel farther, to states such as North Carolina or Illinois, for care.

While the bill received 70 votes in favor and 40 against, seven Republicans, mostly from Southeast Florida and the Tampa area, broke with their party and voted against the ban. Nine representatives did not vote. Despite the potential political ramifications, Governor DeSantis signed the six-week ban, which will undoubtedly have an impact on women’s health in the state. Tennis icon Martina Navratilova’s tweet echoes the disappointment and concern felt by many women in Florida and beyond.

Not just the Florida governor, the former tennis player and activist had also taken to Twitter to express her unease with Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement that he is considering pardoning U.S. Army sergeant Daniel Perry. Perry was found guilty of killing Garrett Foster, an Austin protester, in 2020. Navratilova voiced her concern over the decision via a tweet.

Perry, who was an Uber driver at the time, was found guilty of murder by a Travis County jury after an eight-day trial. The charge stemmed from his shooting and killing of Garrett Foster, who was among the protesters demonstrating against police brutality. Foster was armed with an AK-47 and was part of a group protesting a few blocks from the Capitol in downtown Austin when Perry encountered them.

Even though Perry was found guilty by a jury, Governor Abbott, who was facing pressure from conservatives, instructed the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to hasten their review of Perry’s conviction. The Governor pointed to the Texas Constitution, which mandates that the parole board recommend a pardon before he can take action.
