American tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been left baffled at Nebraska governor Jim Pillen’s refusal to use federal money to feed the pure kids in the state. The former tennis ace fails to understand the issue with these “a**wipe” Republican governors.
As the Nebraska governor confirmed on Saturday that his state will not participate in the 2024 Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children — or Summer EBT — program in a written statement, Pillen faced criticism from the netizens.
Many questioned his reasoning behind the decision not to use federal money to feed poor kids. Meanwhile, Martina Navratilova looked surprised and angry by this decision from the Nebraska governor. The former World No.1 player was so frustrated that she went on to call Pillen an “a**wipe”. She feels something is seriously wrong with such people.
Something is seriously wrong with these asswipe governors- letting kids starve. WTAF???Martina Navratilova wrote on X.
What is Summer EBT program and why Jim Pillen opposes it?
The Summer EBT program (Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children) is aimed at providing deprived children with an opportunity to fulfill their nutritional requirements when they are not going to school. The program involves providing grocery-buying benefits to low-income families by giving them $40 per eligible child, per month.
This program, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic has been made permanent from 2024 onwards. While 28 states have already agreed upon this, a few states like Iowa and Nebraska have refused to sign the agreement.
Jim Pillen, the Nebraska governor has argued that the taxpayers now expect that the program will end considering the pandemic is over. He further stated that he does not believe in welfare.
COVID-19 is over, and Nebraska taxpayers expect that pandemic-era government relief programs will end too. I don’t believe in welfare.Jim Pillen said. (H/T: AP News)
To defend his decision, Pille has argued that the state would continue to help food-insecure children through the Summer Food Service Program, which provides meals and snacks at various sites when school is not in session. However, critics are pointing out that every deprived family might not have access to such sites.
