Czech–American tennis legend Martina Navratilova criticized the Governor of Florida after the state executed a man under the controversial death penalty law. Ron DeSantis, the Governor, played a role in the execution as his Republican Party’s lawmakers filed a set of bills that would replace the unanimous jury requirement.

On Thursday, Florida executed Donald Dillbeck, who was sentenced to death 32 years ago by a non-unanimous jury. The law about the death penalty has been found unconstitutional. But, DeSantis cited the outcome of an earlier trial case as a reason to bring back non-unanimous jury verdicts. Thus the execution and the meddling by DeSantis forced Navratilova to make her opinion public.

“Florida is a more cruel state now, thanks to our dictator,” she wrote on Twitter commenting on the news article by Huffington Post. Through her comment, Navratilova tried to bring out in the open the patchy rule of the Governor.

The news article provided the statement made by Dillbeck right before his execution. “I know I hurt people when I was young. I really messed up,” Dillbeck reportedly said. “But I know Ron DeSantis has done a lot worse.”

This is not the first time, the 66-year-old Navratilova took a swipe at the Governor of Florida. Just a few days back the 18-time Grand Slam champion posted about DeSantis’ hypocritical comments about gun laws. The Republican Party politician has an ambiguous stand on the matter as he supports the right to bear arms but does not want firearms in his own events.

DeSantis wanted to ban guns at events, but not to be blamed, emails show – another hypocritical stance by our governor- open carry for me but not thee when I am around. But grocery stores, schools, shops- A-OK!” Navratilova posted on Twitter.

Navratilova has been a constant voice on social, political, and human rights issues. Despite battling twin cancer, the American tennis legend has not stopped supporting the causes close to her heart. In Politics, more often than not Navratilova takes a dig at Republican leaders including former President Donald Trump.
