Martina Navratilova is known for always being vocal about social and political issues. She has been particularly against the inclusion of transgender women in sports. Despite the amount of criticism and backlash she has received she has never changed her stance.
This time she has gone against the party she supports, as she calls out a Democrat leader. She had previously prominently stated that she was a Democrat and had also donated more than $25,000 to their campaign.
Democratic leader Peter Volosin made a statement regarding the ongoing controversy involving Roanoke College. There are protests in the college against the inclusion of transgender women in sports. The event ‘NCAA- Save Women-‘ came into being as 10 members of the swimming team rose against the inclusion of a transgender swimmer who was part of the men’s swimming team before transitioning.
The former World No.1 has supported former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines in her fight. She responded to an interview with Peter Volosin. He commented that if women want to beat men they should train harder.
The 18-time Grand Slam title champion tweeted and called him out for his statement. She said “Peter Volosin is a massive moron. Try harder my ass.”
Martina Navratilova stands with Roanoke College’s swim team
Martina Navratilova has applauded the Roanoke College swim team for standing up for women’s rights in sports. The activities of the squad were in response to a protest over the inclusion of a transgender student on their women’s swim team.
The 66-year-old who is a major supporter of sports justice and equality, praised the swim team’s dedication to provide a level playing field for female athletes. She emphasized the need to ensure that women’s athletics continue to be a fair and equal opportunity for all female athletes.
The former Wimbledon champion lauded them by posting a picture of the protest with the caption “Well done girls!!! This is exactly what it will take to change the rules!” This is the first time the whole team of female athletes has stood together in public to defend their rights against the eligibility of transgender women in sports.
