Renowned former tennis player Martina Navratilova has been finding herself strangled between controversies as she never fails to speak out her opinions on public platforms. The 66-year-old was caught in the center of a social media firestorm as she made her remarks known about the nomination of a trans-identified male.

Recently, an English trans-identified man was nominated for the Woman of the Year award by an organization launched in 1995. India Willoughby, the former reality television actor, was nominated, which upset the former tennis player. “This nasty piece of work gets nominated for Adult Human Female of the Year? Good to know,” posted the former tennis professional. As expected, this incident ignited a heated debate around Martina’s position in society and the future of trans society.

Willoughby, the UK’s first-ever transgender newsreader, faced a lot of threats and setbacks when she came out to the public. While some argue that trans-identified males should be considered for female-specific awards, others, like Martina, are against this and find it unfair to others.

Martina Navratilova shuts up Harry Potter Star Daniel Radcliffe

The former women’s champion has always stood against trans-identified males getting awards in the women’s category. Earlier in the month, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe resurfaced on Twitter, opening up in support of transgender people.

“Transgender women are women. Any statement to contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I,” said Radcliffe.

To this, the former women’s champion, Martina, said, “Just be quiet, Daniel. Be quiet.” As expected, the controversy surrounding Navratilova’s comments earlier serves as a reminder of the evolution of gender in society, and more and more people are identifying themselves as a different gender, which plays a huge role in the world of sports.

With more and more transgenders competing and winning in the women’s part of the tournament, many famous faces are opening up about the rising issues and asking the respective tournaments to look into the matter as soon as possible. While the world is evolving and people are trying to not do injustice to that gender, it does become a difficulty in sports and other fields.
