Former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova has come down hard against the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) over their latest blunder on TV. The incident occurred during BBC’s reporting on the horrific murder case of Jorge Martin Carreno.

Carreno was murdered in July 2021 in Oxford by Scarlet Blake. The case finally got its much-awaited verdict a few days ago finding Blake guilty. As a result, a life sentence with a minimum of 24 years has been imposed on Blake.

Navratilova got involved in the case following BBC’s mistake that quickly went viral. Blake has claimed to be a woman having changed names to Fangze Wang and later Alice Wang. This however didn’t make any difference during the case although BBC got involved for their mistake.

BBC’s broadcast saw their two journalists discussing the case before the verdict was delivered. During it, they kept on referring to Blake as ‘her’. This triggered many internet users on X (formerly Twitter) who quickly criticized the British media outlet.

Navratilova also saw the clip that’s now been shared on social media. The American was disheartened and disappointed with BBC. She expressed her frustration by replying to the tweet.

Unreal. So irresponsible to do this- and unfair
Tweeted Navratilova.

With the issue of transgender community quite heated nowadays, Navratilova is often involved in presenting her opinion on it. With many sports seeing transgender men playing in women’s competitions and winning them, the 18-time Grand Slam singles title winner has been very critical of it.

BBC did not make any comment on the subject so far. Hopefully, there is some acknowledgment explaining their stance on why Blake was referred to as ‘her’ instead of ‘he’.
