Retired tennis star Martina Navratilova took to X (formerly known as Twitter) today to make a strong stand against the ‘aggressive’ measures being taken by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The Governor is advocating to stop migrants from coming to America.
Recently, law officers, under the orders of Greg Abbott, placed large barriers covered with razor wire and sharp blades in between, across the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass in Texas. The Governor of Texas has made his stand against refugees very clear by now and this step was supposedly taken to stop them from migrating into the state.
However, a huge number of people have called this a way to ‘hurt’ the refugees and even compared the barriers to ‘medieval torture devices’. In the meantime, a number of refugees have died or been severely injured attempting to cross the barrier, including a pregnant 19-year-old girl who lost her baby.
‘The Philadelphia Inquirer’ columnist Will Bunch has brought light to several tragic incidents related to the barrier, including the death of 20-year-old Honduran Norlan Bayardo Herrera. It is this news that Martina Navratilova reacted to on her X account, calling Governor Greg Abbott a psychopath by proxy. She also went on to say that his policies are directly killing people.
Navratilova has always been very vocal about International and national issues like this and she is very quick to point out the wrongs of the world fearlessly. For the same reason, she is often critiqued heavily by some tennis fans.
Martina Navratilova criticizes Texas Governor Greg Abbott over shutting down school libraries
This, however, was not the first time that Navratilova had been vocal against Greg Abbott’s policies and charges. Recently, she also condemned the Texas Governor’s decision to not allow the existence of libraries.
Houston is currently undergoing a shift in the education system, and Greg Abbott has ordered to replace the libraries with multipurpose computer rooms with high technology. Navratilova openly opposed this move, claiming that Abbott is destroying the state of Texas with his new laws and rules. “Abbott is a total disgrace. Ruining Texas one ridiculous rule/law at a time…,” she said while tagging New York Times article on the same issue.
A number of others have raised their concerns regarding this revolutionary change as well. The closing of libraries directly axes the jobs of many librarians and also destroys the culture of reading. Many are also worried about the already growing screen-on time among students and adults alike.
