A few days ago ahead of Morocco‘s first match at the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup, captain Ghizlane Chebbak was asked a couple of brave and complicated questions by the BBC media. A lot of fuss was generated, leading to which BBC even apologized to the Morrocan team and their board as the questions asked by one of their interviewers was too sensitive and hurt the emotions of several players.

The question targeted the homosexuality topic which could even lead to the safety of the players at the ongoing World Cup. The interviewer asked her, “In Morocco, it is illegal to have a gay relationship. Do you have any gay players in your squad and what’s life like for them in Morocco?” Before Chebbak could even react to this, a FIFA correspondent stopped the interviewer saying, “Sorry this is a very political question so we will just stick to questions relating to football.”

A stranger posted a tweet regarding this incident on Twitter saying, “BBC sorry for asking how many Moroccan footballers are lesbians. Are they sorry for potentially putting them in danger, and have they ever asked the same question of the men’s teams…” Tennis star, Martina Navratilova was present at the right time yet again calling the shots thereby retweeting the spot with the caption, “I can’t believe these wankers are still asking these questions. And of course, they would NEVER ask a man about his team…”

Media outlet BBC has received widespread hate for asking such grievous questions to the captain of Morocco’s female national team thereby also causing the risk of their safety.

Back in Morocco, homosexuality is taken very seriously with the guilty party convicted of intense punishment leading to up to 5 years of prison. Despite no further conversations at the post-conference, this incident has been talked about and discussed a lot back in Morocco.

LGBTQ rights is a very sensitive topic in any Muslim country and it created a to of fuss back last year when the Men’s FIFA World Cup tournament was hosted by Qatar. It was the first-ever Islamic country to host a FIFA tournament and there were many incidents regarding the ban of rainbow-colored jerseys, caps, and flags in the stadium back then. Morocco also was accused of hiding their unjust policies regarding the LGBTQ issue which ultimately led them to lose their attempt in hosting the 2026 World Cup.
