Former Czech-American player Martina Navratilova has been an active socialist standing up for equal rights for women as well as gay and lesbian people. She does not mince her words while standing up for a cause she firmly believes in. She once slammed former US President Donald Trump and his government for their unjustified and careless behavior toward American citizens.
She is one of the greatest players of all time and has been influential in popularizing women’s tennis. She played in four different decades as her career spanned from 1974 to 2006 and won 18 major titles in singles, 31 titles in doubles, and 10 titles in mixed doubles. She has been vocal about her opinions on various political issues throughout the world and doesn’t shy away from sharing her views despite being criticized for her harsh words.
During an interview on a chat show, the host asked a serious question about her thoughts that shocked everyone. The question was on the comparison grounds that the Communist leaders in Czechoslovakia are more concerned for its people than the 45th US President. She revealed that there is a lot of compassion among Czech leaders and are much more concerned and really care about their own people which isn’t the case with American citizens. She admitted that US Government is less concerned.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion revealed that “Absolutely…they had a cushy life. If you become a member of the Communist Party, it was mostly men; it was hardly any women in there, but we did have any women, like, professors and doctors, but not in a position of power in the government because there was no other position of power, right? But you still felt that they wanted to do well by people. I never felt like that didn’t care if you’d lived or died. So, no this kind of psychopathy was not the case back then.“
Martina Navratilova blamed George W Bush as the reason for becoming a dual citizen
Navratilova was stripped of her citizenship at the age of 18 in 1975 when she decided to leave her home and flee from her country. She had asked for political asylum in the USA after leaving her country. But she wasn’t allowed any citizenship for the next few years until 1981.
But after almost two decades, the former 8-time Australian Open champion revoked her Czech citizenship despite retaining her American citizenship as well. She went on to state that the reason for it was none other than George W. Bush and his Presidentship. Martina Navratilova claimed that she was ashamed of the former President’s actions for suppressing the people’s right to express themselves and even expressed her unhappiness over not awarding equal rights to gay and lesbian individuals.
