American tennis legend Martina Navratilova has again raised an important issue which concerns the gun rights laws in the United States of America. The second amendment in the US constitution without any favour or discrimination gives the right to bear arms to all the American citizens to safeguard themselves.
However, this right and laws under it came under serious attack following cases of shootings in schools, colleges, marketplaces, etc. in the USA. Hence, many advocated to remove this right from the US constitution or regulate buying and selling of weapons. Many also approached the courts and pressurized legislatures to make laws according to it.
The US Supreme Court last year ruled that this right cannot be infringed or taken away by issuing any government order or action. Hence, all the laws passed to regulate buying and selling of weapons by different states in the USA became unconstitutional. This has brought the regulations passed by New Mexico state in question.
“What I hope we don’t do is lead the public into believing we’re doing something, knowing full well that what we’re doing is unlikely to really have an effect. I think that’s a disservice to people,” Joseph Cervantes, the state Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, said at the hearing last month.
The three-time Australian Open champion who is popular for making bold political opinions has criticized the US Supreme Court for holding on to this archaic law and not allowing things to change. She voiced her opinions in her latest social media post. She also shared a news article of The Huffington Post.
