Martina Navratilova disses British Royal Family and PM Rishi Sunak as England’s women’s national team makes the finals of the FIFA World Cup

Martina Navratilova has called out British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Royal family members for not attending a single match of England's FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign despite qualifying for the final.

Retired tennis star Martina Navratilova has taken a dig at the British Royal family and PM Rishi Sunak through X (formerly known as Twitter) for not attending a single Women’s World Cup match despite the English team qualifying for the finals of the tournament.

Notably, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has been going on since July 20. The tournament is being hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand and started off with 32 teams. After a month-long tournament, only two finalists, England and Spain, remained, and they will face each other in the final tomorrow at Australia’s Accor Stadium at 3:30 PM IST.

However, despite the immense popularity of football in England, neither their newly appointed Prime Minister Rishi Sunak nor a single member of the Royal Family has cared to attend any of their women’s team’s matches in the World Cup so far. It is this ‘unjust bias’ that many people have raised their voices against, and that includes retired tennis player Martina Navratilova.

Jolyon Rubinstein, a BAFTA-winning writer and performer, condemned the British Royal family and Rishi Sunak for their ignorance through Twitter today where he wrote, “England are in an actual World Cup final this weekend @Lionesses. Let’s get behind them like Prince Andrew gets behind his legal team. It’s an absolute joke that the PM who’s private Jet flights are legendary and the male-led Royals haven’t seen fit to attend. Sod them all. We are behind you! Come on, England!” 

Martina Navratilova replied, “If this were the men’s team, they would all be fighting for the seats…” 

Neither England nor Spain have had the fortune of winning the Women’s World Cup title yet, which means fans will see a new champion tomorrow. However, the way both these nations’ women’s leagues have performed over the last few years, it is only evident that Spain and England are making massive improvements in women’s football. No wonder they have caught up with the USA pretty quickly.

Martina Navratilova calls Texas Governor Greg Abbott a ‘Psychopath’ for putting his anti-refugee policies

The former tennis legend has always been very vocal about the social and political injustices in the world. She most recently blasted Texas Governor Greg Abbott for putting barbed wire barriers with razor-sharp blades in between across the Rio Grande to stop refugees from coming to America. 

Numerous incidents of migrants trying to come into America getting injured or even dying have emerged in recent days. Recently, a 20-year-old Honduran named Norlan Bayardo Herrera died trying to cross the barrier. Talking about this incident, Navratilova wrote on X, “Greg Abbott is a psychopath by proxy; his policies directly kill people.”
