Former tennis player and an absolute legend of the sport, Martina Navratilova has been involved in a constant altercation with former Olympic gold medalist Caitlyn Jenner over the serious topic of the transgender policy in America. Martina had also pointed fingers at the United States Tennis Association for the board’s transgender inclusion policy with a post on Twitter.
Martina replied to a statement made by the Independent Council on Women’s Sports founder, Kim Shasby Jones. Jones targeted women’s tennis saying that they are quickly turning “into a laughing stock” due to the transgender policies. Martina replied to this saying, “Come on @USTA- women’s tennis is not for failed male athletes- whatever age. This is not right and it is not fair. Would this be allowed at the US Open this month? Just with self-ID? I don’t think so…”
Caitlyn Jenner on the other hand, held Martina responsible and also guilty for her showcasing of double standards regarding women’s tennis. She retweeted a tweet from Fox Sports with the caption, “Agreed. But why support Biden and the party that wants this to be the law of the land – and BLOCKS – Republicans from protecting Title IX?! You can’t have it both ways, Martina.”
What policies are Martina Navratilova and Caitlyn Jenner debating against?
USTA released a statement a few days ago about their transgender inclusion policy which clearly states that any player who decides to move away from male tennis and posses a career, needs to clearly declare themselves as females first. The statement also said that this decision of transition cannot be henceforth reversed whatsoever in the next four years.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
This has led to a lot of people losing their heads on the step taken by USTA with many pundits and experts all around the globe still carrying their protest and continuing to debate on the decision. Some feel that the main debate would be to identify one individual as male or female and if an individual declares themselves as female but has the features of a male body, then that person will bring a lot of problems in female tennis thereby posing a clear advantage over other players.
