“We don’t need trash representing our country”- Martina Navratilova gets on the wrong side of netizens after her support to US Women’s football team over declining to sing the national anthem at the World Cup

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has once again taken the internet by storm, now citing her indications about the US Women’s Soccer team. The US team now participating in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand has taken a huge step by deciding not to sing their national anthem in their opening matchup against Vietnam.

This incident has raised a lot of eyebrows, with the former governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, bashing the players on Twitter. Martina has thereby stood beside the players, defending them for their actions. Nikki posted on Twitter, saying, “The US women’s soccer team is living the American Dream. They were born in the freest, fairest country in the world that has rewarded their hard work.”

She also added, “They should remember that blessing & the men & women (like my husband) proudly defending it next time the national anthem plays.” To this Martina replied, “They are defending it by playing their hardest and winning most of the time. Not by singing. Get a grip and start talking about solutions rather than searching for problems where there aren’t any.”

The US players were criticized all over social media for their decision to not join in for the national anthem in their first group matchup against Vietnam. Out of all the 11 players, only Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, and Lindsey Horan decided to sing along with the fans in the stadium. Most of the players didn’t even bother to put their hands on their chests while the anthem was played, leading to even more controversy.

Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:

The US female players have been associated with several controversies with the American government. Despite being the most successful female football team in terms of trophies, the players have always protested against the board’s unjustified treatment. From getting their “equal pay” demand finally sanctioned after their World Cup win way back in 2019 to fighting several battles, the US players have always been adamant about their instincts both off and on the pitch.
