Former Czech-American tennis player Martina Navratilova shared her opinion on climate activists interrupting Coco Gauff’s semifinal match at the 2023 US Open as she wrote a 7-word tweet on X. The 66-year-old, who shares her opinion on almost anything and everything around her, feels that was not the best way to garner support for a cause.

Notably, four climate activists started to protest during the match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova which caused a delay of 49 minutes. While three of them were escorted safely by the security personnel, one of the protestors had glued his bare feet to the ground. It took some while to escort this one protestor.

The players, meanwhile, had to wait for almost an hour. While the match resumed after everything resorted back to normalcy, the protestors caught significant attention. A debate around whether it was a right move from these climate activists to halt a game for so long was justified or not started on social media.

Amid this debate, Navratilova shared her opinion saying it was definitely not the best way to garner support. “Not the best way to garner support…,” wrote Navratilova.

While Martina Navratilova openly shared her views about the climate change protest at the US Open, the person who was most affected by it also spoke about it. Coco Gauff was asked about the delay in the match due to the protest and also about her views on the matter. The 19-year-old American said that she 100% believes in climate change and also feels that something must be done about it.

However, Gauff was also not too comfortable with the idea of halting a game to protest on the matter. “I believe in climate change. I don’t know exactly what they were protesting.. I 100% believe there are things we could do better. Would I prefer it not happening in my match? 100%. It is what it is.. moments like this are history-defining moments,” said Gauff.

The 19-year-old then accepted that she was not too upset about those four people doing it. “I can’t get too mad at it.. if that’s what they felt they needed to do to get their voices heard I can’t really get upset at it,” Gauff added.
