Tennis icon Martina Navratilova is once again amidst criticism for her outspoken nature. The former world number one has never hesitated in speaking out her mind, which has always caused a lot of stirs. During yesterday’s match, when French player Alize Cornet slipped while playing on the court, Navratilova didn’t hold herself back while calling her a ‘drama queen’.

Bad weather has been a constant foe in this year’s Wimbledon. The organizers of the All England Club have failed to schedule matches appropriately, which might be suitable for the players as well as would not cause them any injury. Matches are constantly being delayed and players are constantly getting injured due to slippery courts.

In a similar situation was Cornet when she was playing against defending champion Elena Rybakina in the Centre court. During the second set, with both players at the draw, Cornet went through a nasty fall as she lost her grip on the grass court. The distress was evident as Cornet burst into tears and the medical team had to rush in. While all this was going on, Navratilova, who was commentating for BBC, said “Cornet can be a bit of a drama queen.” Her comment was uncalled for and quite insensitive, as it was clearly evident that the French was in tremendous pain.

Eventually, Cornet’s team strapped her up with tapes on her right leg. It should be noted that her right leg was already in strappings due to a previous injury. The French showed immense courage and got back on the court to play against Rybakina. The match was halted at 5-5, but Cornet’s chance of winning slipped away as Rybakina defeated her in 6-2,7-6.

After the nasty fall and her heartbreaking loss at the grass court, Cornet told the reporters that the All England Club treat players differently. She compared how it is relatively easy for her at the French Open, as she is a native. “It’s a different treatment on every Slam,” she said. “When I’m at home, in Roland Garros, I have priorities over the courts, I know everybody, I can ask when I want to play,” she remarked

Then in Wimbledon, you have a huge difference between the seeded players and the other players. This is not new,” stated the French. She called out the authorities by telling them to treat every player equally, as the tournament exists because of all the player and not a few.

The French stated that lower ranked players are made to play in outside courts while the top ranked gets the bigger court. She commented that the US Open and Australian Open are much better at treating players fairly, but the best way to receive priority is by being a top-ranked player.
