Martina Navratilova has been one of the most vocal tennis personalities on Twitter. The former World No. 1 does not shy away from voicing her opinion on any topic irrespective of its relation to tennis. She’s a strong advocate for equality irrespective of gender, race, sexual orientation, and religion.

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup scheduled in Qatar, the eyes of the entire globe are on the footballing spectacle. The tournament has however been criticized massively. The nation has issued strict guidelines against any promotion of the LGBT community while the issue of human rights violations in the construction of stadiums has been in news for a long time.

With the World Cup about to start on 20th November, rumors of pop star Dua Lipa performing in the opening ceremony were floating. The Briton has however come out and quashed the rumors.

“I look forward to visiting Qatar when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup,” said Lipa as reported by Variety. Lipa’s comments were welcomed by Navratilova who took to her own Twitter handle to say, “Well Done Dua Lipa.”

The singer had performed in the opening ceremony of the 2018 UEFA Champions League Finals played between Real Madrid and Liverpool which led to speculations about her performance in Qatar. However, with her latest tweet, she has clarified the situation taking a moral stand on the subject.

Qatar has already prohibited affairs between visitors and players and also the consumption of alcohol in the stadiums. With the country following the teachings of Islam, they have asked the players and fans to not make any statement or protest that violates the country’s religious beliefs appealing for cooperation.

England’s captain Harry Kane is however ready to accept any fine for wearing the captain’s armbands with the LGBT colors and might have the laces of his shoes as well in the rainbow colors. Many other footballers have hinted at following Kane’s footsteps as they look to make the sport inclusive for all.

However, Qatar has remained adamant that it will not bend its rules. The 2022 FIFA World Cup commences on 20th November with the host nation Qatar taking on Ecuador in the opening match of the World Cup.
