American tennis legend Martina Navratilova took to Twitter to condemn former U.S. President Donald Trump for his recent court hearings over indictment charges. In a tweet, she wrote, “How do you spell traitor? I spell it T-R-U-M-P”.

Navratilova has always been vocal about her political opinions, taking every opportunity to make a bold political statement on Twitter. While her opinions usually echo that of the general public (at times the tennis community in particular), some of her statements have also brought about heated debates over public matters, be they political or tennis-related.

Navratilova’s lack of discretion while ridiculing the former President is not without reason. While Trump had already had a turbulent term riddled with controversies as president, his exit was perhaps the biggest bombshell. After publicly questioning the 2020 presidential election’s credibility, Trump sought to overturn the election’s results in a desperate attempt to stay in power.

Not only did the act count as the first time a president had willfully obstructed a federal proceeding – something as significant as the president’s elections no less, but Trump also denied the citizens of America their basic right of having their vote counted. One of the indictments also asserted that Trump knew the claims of voter fraud were false and yet continued to perpetuate them, demonstrating his willingness to deceive the American people.

These actions committed by Trump as president had a massive effect; The U.S. Capitol Riots in January 2021 served as a reminder of the utter misuse of public influence that Trump demonstrated at the end of his tenure.

People on Twitter voiced their own opinions which reflected those of Navratilova. They remarked that it is a fatal flaw in the constitution and the vision of the general public that caused an individual such as Trump to be elected to arguably the most powerful position in the modern world.
