Republican Nikki Haley recently made a surprising statement at a town hall in Berlin, New Hampshire, which has raised many eyebrows. The incident was brought to the attention of legendary tennis player Martina Navratilova and she has bashed the former Governor of South Carolina on Twitter (now called X).

Talking about the incident, Nikki Haley was asked by a voter what exactly was the cause of the Civil War. In response, she said that the war was about the government interfering in people’s freedoms. The politician did not even mention slavery, which was hands down the biggest factor that led to the American Civil War, which began in 1861.

In fact, it was only due to the Civil War that slavery was abolished in 1865 by the 13th Amendment that was passed by the government. As a result, she had to face a lot of criticism on social media.

Navratilova, who always makes sure to voice her opinions on issues related to world politics and human rights, obviously would not have missed this opportunity. Moreover, Martina Navratilova is pretty well known for being anti-Republicans and anti-Trump, to be specific.

Wow- Nikki- shame on you for this one. Freedom my a**.
Martina Navratilova wrote on X, taking a dig at Nikki Haley.

Nikki Haley explains her statement regarding Civil War after backlash

Haley tried to do some damage control after the numerous criticisms that she received following her statement on the American Civil War. She said that, of course, she knows that the American Civil War was fought to abolish slavery, but overall, the theme of the Civil War was freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

But what’s the lesson in all of that? That we need to make sure that every person has freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do and be anything they want to be without anyone or the government getting in the way. That was the goal of what that was at. Yes, I know it was about slavery. I’m from the South, of course I know it’s about slavery

Nikki Haley is one of the Republican candidates for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections. She is the third-most-supported Republican candidate after Donald Trump and Ron Desantis
