Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with early-stage throat and breast cancer. The 18-time Grand Slam champion recently revealed that she has been diagnosed after initially discovering an enlarged lymph node in her neck back in November 2022. The two tumors are unrelated to each other. For context, Navratilova previously had breast cancer but was given the all-clear after surgery and radiation therapy in 2010.

A spokesperson for Navratilova said that she will be focusing on treatment and won’t be attending the Australian Open, where she was due to be a TV pundit. The spokesperson mentioned that Navratilova hopes to give her insights through occasional Zoom calls on Tennis Channel.

Navratilova said, “This double whammy is serious but still fixable. I’m hoping for a favorable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while but I’ll fight with all I have got.” She has specifically been diagnosed with human papillomavirus (HPV), which is one of the more treatable types. Her spokesperson added,“Both these cancers are in their early stages with great outcomes.

The tennis sensation even revealed how she reacted back in 2010, upon being diagnosed with breast cancer as she cried for straight 15 seconds, before asking the doctor how to proceed and beat the disease.

She has won the third most Grand Slam singles titles in history, with 18 to her name.
