Former number 1 and one of the greatest players of all time, Martina Navratilova has given a heads up to Wimbledon for handing out a wild card entry to the American icon, Venus Williams for the 2023 tournament.
Williams couldn’t qualify for the grass court and was expectant for a wild card entry in the event. On 21st June, the Wimbledon organization released a list of players who have been given a wild card entry for the tournament and the elder Williams sister found her name on the list.
After the list was announced, Tennis Letter tweeted in agreement with the decision of the organization and commented how Williams deserve a wild card for ‘as many years as she would like to play.’ The Czech American, Navratilova, quoted this tweet with her own, saying, “Ditto. A no brainer.”
It appears that Navratilova has been watching, Williams’ game closely. She took to Twitter to call out Camila Giorgi “disgusting” after Giorgi screamed in delight when Williams took a hard fall on the court. Subsequently, Williams won the match with a 7-6 (5) 4-6 7-6 (6) win.
“Serves her right. Venus kicked her butt anyway!!! How disgusting from Giorgi if that is how it happened,” commented the Czech American.
With an illustrious career, including nine Wimbledon singles titles and eleven doubles titles, Navratilova’s endorsement carries significant weight. Navratilova herself has won Wimbledon, 9 times in singles and 11 times in doubles. She is an 18-time Grand Slam Champion in singles and has 31 major women’s doubles titles. The Czech American has been ranked number 1 for a total of 332 weeks, second only to the German superstar, Steffi Graff. She is also a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

A last-minute entry to Venus Williams at Wimbledon

As Venus Williams has finally got an entry to Wimbledon, the 43-year-old will be looking forward to winning her 6th Wimbledon title. In the past few years, her ranking has seen a setback due to several injuries. In January, while playing against Celine Naef in the Libema Open, Venus sustained a hamstring injury which necessitated for her to take a break for 5 months.
Nevertheless, the ace player made a return and is currently participating in the Birmingham Classic. On 19th June (Monday) she secured a thrilling victory against Italian player Camila Giorgi in the first round, marking her first win in the WTA Tour in the past two years.
Venus Williams has her name etched over two US Open singles and was ranked number one for the first time in February 2002. She is currently ranked in the 554th position. She has proceeded into the second round of the Birmingham Classic where she is set to face Latvian player, Jeļena Ostapenko.
Other than Williams, wildcard entries for women’s singles have also been allotted to Elina Svitolina, Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Katie Swan, and Heather Watson, with one player still to be announced.
