Martina Navratilova has joined the chorus of voices expressing relief and support for former actor Danny Masterson‘s sentence of 30 years to life in prison for raping two women. In May, the actor was found guilty of terrible crimes stretching back to the early 2000s. The incident sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond.

The 47-year-old actor, best known for his part in the iconic throwback TV comedy ‘That ’70s Show,’ was convicted in a retrial after a jury deadlocked on a charge involving a third woman. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo imposed the maximum punishment authorized by law. He indicated that Masterson would be eligible for parole in 25-1/2 years. Since his conviction, Masterson has been imprisoned.

The case gained prominence because Masterson met the two ladies through the Church of Scientology, of which he was a prominent member. According to the allegations, the organization attempted to protect the actor and coerce the victims into quiet. It also forbade them from calling law enforcement.

Prosecutors based their case on these charges, but the Church of Scientology reacted angrily. It accused the prosecution of spreading “fabrications about the Church in order to introduce prejudice and inflame bigotry.” The organization’s response exacerbated the debate around the case even more.

The women implicated in the case had bravely come forward to share their stories. They alleged that Masterson had drugged and raped them on separate occasions at his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003.

As the court proceedings came to a close with Masterson’s sentencing, many in Hollywood and the general public expressed their sympathy for the survivors and relief that justice had been served. Martina Navratilova‘s forthright reaction reflects the sentiment of many who wish that the victims find peace and healing in the aftermath of this high-profile tragedy.
