Former World No. 1 Martina Navratilova‘s protest against the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports continues every day.
The American, who herself identifies as a proud lesbian, has been one of the many opposers of allowing transgender athletes to play in the women’s leagues and divisions. She has been very vocal about the issue which is one of the most debated topics in recent times.
While American sports and leagues are becoming more open, the protests of women athletes over it continue.
The biggest debate remains around the transgender athletes still having an increased level of testosterone which enables them to have better strength as compared to other women. This then translates into the results which are being considered as an ‘undue advantage’ by the opposers of inclusion.
Navratilova’s recent dig was directed at the LPGA after transgender golfer Hailey Davidson emerged victorious in a women’s event. The Women’s Classic was part of the NXXT Women’s Pro Tour based in Florida where Davidson earned her first victory of the season. This now boosts her chances of getting the LPGA card.
LPGA is ideally meant to provide ‘growth opportunities’ to female players and their inclusion policy has led to their criticism. Her win led to massive outrage from fans who questioned Davidson’s eligibility and criticized the LPGA for their relaxation of the criteria. Navratilova also tweeted opposing it.

As per the LPGA website, in the past 25 years, more than 600 alumnae of the Epson Tour have earned the LPGA card. The Tour removed its ‘female at birth’ category from the eligibility list in 2010 and has been welcoming transgender athletes for nearly half a decade now.
Hailey Davidson’s journey into becoming a trans athlete
Hailey Davidson was born in Scotland but moved to Florida a while ago. The last event where Davidson competed as a male was back in 2015 before starting the hormonal treatment in the same year. The reassigning of gender finally took place in 2021 following the surgery as per a report of Golfweek in 2021.
She has shot down her critics by simply calling them ‘transphobic’ as she continues to top the leaderboard with 1320 points, the most on NXXT. With 10 exemptions up for grabs, the chances of Davidson winning it increase significantly after her maiden win. Eight more events are scheduled before the conclusion of the Tour Championship in Florida.
Navratilova continues to be one of the loudest voices opposing this inclusion. However, the sports authorities are ensuring their decisions are not influenced and taken with complete objectivity. Whether Davidson makes it to the LPGA, only time will tell.
