Martina Navratilova has extended her support to Andy Murray‘s decision to retire from the court after the summer Paris Olympics. The three-time Grand Slam winner has been finding it difficult to get past the round of 16 of tournaments and is convinced it is time to hang up his racquet.

The British legend’s struggle for form and fitness began in 2018 after suffering a major hip injury that sidelined him for more than half of the season and 2019.

After surgery and rehabilitation, the 36-year-old found it difficult to play well enough in a match, but last season he claimed the Aix-en-Provence title, Surbiton and Nottingham crown.

However, it didn’t get better in 2024, as the Briton didn’t win a match until February. After winning his second match of the season in Dubai, the former World No. 1 announced that his dream is to play in the Paris Olympics and retire from the sport

During an interview with Sky Sports, Navratilova supported the British legend’s decision to quit tennis, adding that making it public to the press makes it exhausting.

I was asked since I was about 25 years old, how much longer are you going to play? Finally, I said 'I'll let you know when I'm going to retire' and so in 1993 I said the next year will be my last year, but I wish I hadn't done that because every tournament was a massive goodbye and it was exhausting.
Said Martina Navratilova.
If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't tell the press.I think Andy is doing the right thing not telling them, whether he knows it or not. It's easier not to tell anyone if you don't know what you're going to do but it's frustrating when you're not winning when you're used to winning.
Continuing further, she added

Meanwhile, Murray earlier stated that, despite his rank, he is hoping to make it to the Paris Olympics. The Briton is now ranked at No. 61 in the ATP rankings, which is below the top-56 limited entry.

Andy Murray to face Matteo Berrettini in Miami Open

Andy Murray will face Italian Matteo Berrettini in the first round of the Miami Open. The British legend will hope to get past the experienced Berrettini, who recently reached the final of the second-tier Challenger in Phoenix. The winner of the match will play Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the round of 64.

The ATP legend’s last win was at Indian Wells against David Goffin in the first round. However, his stay in the California desert was short-lived after he was beaten by Andrey Rublev in the second round.

Murray, who has won the Miami Open twice, will be hoping for a good farewell on the Florida beach as he nears retirement.
