Martina Navratilova recently commented on a post on social media that has fans gaping. For context, a user on social media talked about the Big 3 and Serena Williams‘ Grand Slam victories. They cited the fierce competition between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the court as “the greatest individual rivalry in sports history”.
Notably, the rivalry between Evert and Navratilova was the talk of the tennis world back in the 1970s and 1980s. The duo dominated the world rankings, holding the top two ranks for 10 years straight from 1977 to 1987. They clashed 80 times over their entire career, of which 60 were finals. Both of them together won a record 15 consecutive Major singles titles, from the 1981 Australian Open to the 1985 Wimbledon Championship.
A user on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) gave their opinion on one of the recurring questions among tennis fans. Tennis fans often discuss who the greatest player of all time is. Concerned with answering this question, the user reminded the fans that no other player has had rivals quite like Evert and Navratilova had each other.
“For all the talk of how many majors the Big 3 and Serena have, keep in mind that Chrissie Evert and Martina Navratilova won 18 slams APIECE and either could have had 25-30+ without the other,” the user pointed out. Agreeing with the post, Navratilova commented that there was, “Nothing to argue about on this,” with a smiling face.
The friendship between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova
The ever-famous rivalry between two of the most influential tennis players in history is incomparable to that in any other sport. However, tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert’s on-court battles bloomed into a beautiful friendship off the court. The two had developed a deep respect and friendship off the court, which came as a shock to many.
The duo first met at Akron in 1973 and remembered the encounter well enough to include it in their autobiographies. Both of them held a deep admiration for each other’s gameplay and their behavior off-court. At the end of their careers, both of them ended up with 18 Grand Slam victories each. A few years ago, the two were diagnosed with cancer and fought it together. The shared diagnosis drew them closer together than ever.
