Martina Navratilova was asked by Wimbledon to take off her cap with the words “IMPEACH” as she took a dig at then-President Donald Trump
Martina Navratilova with her IMPEACH cap, Donald Trump
Martina Navratilova has been one of the harshest critics of the Republican party. The 18-time Grand Slam champion has been one of the strongest Democrat supporters. Former American President Donald Trump has often been criticised by Navratilova irrespective of his status as the President.
While Navratilova often makes political statements through her Twitter handle, she took things to next level at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. During the second week of the Grand Slam, Navratilova donned a white cap with the words “IMPEACH” designed on it in red colour grabbing all the attention.
Playing in the Legends’ Doubles match, Navratilova had the cap on which was a direct dig at then American President Trump. She was however asked to remove it by the tournament officials during the first changeover. She immediately removed the cap saying, “Sorry about that. Forgot I had it on.”
Martina Navratilova’s aimed dig at Donald Trump with her IMPEACH cap explained
Trump became the President of the USA on 20th January 2017. While he did manage to complete one full term of 4 years, there were a lot of issues that came up during his tenure where he was asked to resign as the President. Navratilova‘s actions were on the same lines.
In 2019, it was Trump‘s third year in charge and the Democrats were looking for ways to dissolve the Trump government. With Navratilova invited to the Legends match, she knew she would have global attention and decided to use it to make her statement.
While she did not make any protest when asked to remove the cap, the short time of her cap getting attention was enough for her to make the statement. This was however the second demonstration by Navratilova in space of a few months against Trump back in 2019.
Navratilova had tweeted about wearing a similar cap in Florida and driving with it. She had taken another dig at the President over his supporters of wearing the caps only during rallies and not casually like she did while wearing the IMPEACH cap.
