Matteo Berrettini has suffered a handful of setbacks this season, sidelining him from major tournaments which could help the Italian bolster his dropped ATP ranking.

Subsequently, clouds of uncertainty continue to haunt the Italian professional after a recent foot injury may result in his potential absence from the 2024 Brisbane International. It is worth noting that Berrettini ended the ongoing season prematurely after he sprained his ankle during his US Open campaign earlier this season.

The 27-year-old’s bad run of form this year plummeted his run in Grand Slams where he failed to move past the second round and further skipped the French Open entirely.

Most recently, the former World No. 6 was set back with a new injury to his right foot merely days before his Brisbane campaign, a warm-up event for the season’s first Grand Slam, the Australian Open. The Australian hardcourt event would also witness the return of Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal who skipped the entire 2023 season after sustaining a reoccurring hip injury.

Matteo Berrettini has been registered for the qualifying round of the Brisbane event owing to the massive drop in his ranking – currently placed at the 92nd spot. The qualifying phase of the tournament begins on Thursday, followed by the main draw which is scheduled to kick off on December 31.

Matteo Berrettini recently gave insight into his potential comeback in the 2024 season and made honest admissions about the disadvantageous side of competing due to his dropped ranking.

The Italian’s season was cut short after an abrupt ankle injury forced him to concede the match during his second-round clash against Arthur Rinderknech at the US Open. The 27-year-old concluded the 2023 season with merely 12 wins to his name, coupled with 11 losses.

Ahead of his potential Brisbane International comeback, the former World No. 6 recently commented about his current status in the ATP Tour during his appearance at the 2023 SuperTennis Awards in Milan. The Italian also highlighted the disadvantages he poses due to his position on the ranking chart.

Berrettini said via Eurosport:

I will now return with the tournaments in Australia but with my current ranking everything will be more complicated.

The 27-year-old recently parted ways with his longtime coach Vincenzo Santopadre after working with the countryman since his childhood days at 12 years old.
