Jannik Sinner became the new champion in Melbourne when he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday (January 28) to claim his first Grand Slam title.

Sinner reached his first Grand Slam final after he knocked out 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals in four sets 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6-8), 6-3. With this win, Sinner also became the first Italian (male or female) to win an Australian Open singles title in the Open Era, plus he also became the youngest player from Italy to lift a major title.

On the other hand, Berrettini did not play at the Australian Open due to a foot injury. The former World No. 6 had an injury-riddled season last year and even missed the US Open due to an ankle injury.

Marathon man Daniil Medvedev fails to prevail after suffocating Jannik Sinner in the first two sets

That Jannik Sinner would get the chance to hold his first Grand Slam trophy so easily was not expected, for his match was against marathon man Daniil Medvedev. From the very first set, Sinner was running out of breath because the Russian attacked from the word go and played aggressively.

But that led to a decrease in stamina and he looked exhausted. Prior to his meeting with Sinner, the Russian played two five-setters in the semifinals and quarterfinals, against Alexander Zverev and Hubert Hurkacz. Sinner, after the match, said he was looking for small chances to break to break the 27-year-old.

The match was going so fast in the first two sets. I had zero chance to play at this level but I was looking for just the small chances. I managed to break him and then win one set at a time, one game at a time.
Sinner said after the match

Before this feat at the Australian Open, Sinner’s best performance at a Grand Slam event came in the 2023 Wimbledon when he reached the semifinals.
