Former Italian player Flavia Pennetta offered some words of encouragement to Matteo Berrettini following criticisms he received over his form and his relationship. Since winning the ATP 500 Cinch Championships in June 2022, Berrettini has experienced a decline in form. Despite being considered one of the top contenders at Wimbledon 2022, having finished as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the previous year, he was forced to withdraw from the tournament after testing positive for COVID-19 just before his first-round match.
Matteo Berrettini made it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open, where he lost to Casper Ruud. He was defeated in a dramatic five-set match in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open by Andy Murray. Berrettini also experienced an early elimination at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open.
Flavia Pennetta stated that people tend to get overly excited and have high expectations when a player starts winning. However, tennis is a challenging sport, and success cannot be taken for granted. Despite this, criticism and negative comments can still have a significant impact on a player. She said “I tell you this from experience. We feel responsible and it weighs because people exaggerate and go crazy. My advice is that you have to learn to let go. Matteo rightly said that he was a normal boy and his situation was completely normal. He’s totally right.”
Flavia Pennetta had a successful career both on and off the court, and she is currently the wife of Fabio Fognini. She has gone through challenging times similar to those that Matteo Berrettini is currently facing. Berrettini has been criticized for both his personal life and his recent performances, which have not lived up to his talent.
“Take me off the court, I swear I’m unwatchable,” Matteo Berrettini becomes extremely angry with himself
Matteo Berrettini is currently going through a challenging period. He suffered a defeat in the quarterfinals of the Phoenix Challenger tournament, losing to Alexander Shevchenko, who is ranked 132nd in the world. Berrettini had entered the tournament with the intention of earning 175 points by winning, following his first-round exit from the Indian Wells tournament against Taro Daniel.
Despite Matteo Berrettini’s efforts to win, things did not go as planned. He managed to advance through the first two rounds with some difficulty but unexpectedly lost to the 22-year-old Ukrainian player, Alexander Shevchenko, who is ranked lower than him at 132 in the world. This result caused great frustration for Berrettini, and he is struggling to find the form that had previously made him one of the most competitive tennis players on this surface.
“Take me off the court, I swear I’m unwatchable,” Berrettini shouted impatiently. Berrettini’s current difficult period has had an impact on his behavior on the court, causing him to display nervous gestures that he rarely showed in his career thus far.
