Former Italian player Flavia Pennetta offered some words of encouragement to Matteo Berrettini following criticisms he received over his form and his relationship. Since winning the ATP 500 Cinch Championships in June 2022, Berrettini has experienced a decline in form. Despite being considered one of the top contenders at Wimbledon 2022, having finished as the runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the previous year, he was forced to withdraw from the tournament after testing positive for COVID-19 just before his first-round match.
Matteo Berrettini made it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open, where he lost to Casper Ruud. He was defeated in a dramatic five-set match in the first round of the 2023 Australian Open by Andy Murray. Berrettini also experienced an early elimination at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open.
Flavia Pennetta stated that people tend to get overly excited and have high expectations when a player starts winning. However, tennis is a challenging sport, and success cannot be taken for granted. Despite this, criticism and negative comments can still have a significant impact on a player. She said “I tell you this from experience. We feel responsible and it weighs because people exaggerate and go crazy. My advice is that you have to learn to let go. Matteo rightly said that he was a normal boy and his situation was completely normal. He’s totally right.”
