Egyptian tennis player Mayar Sherif has pointed out how the racist agenda has seen the Russia-Ukraine war getting all the attention while Palestine continues to suffer from Israel’s attacks. Sherif has claimed that Palestine, being a country in the Middle East does not get as much attention as Ukraine from the top leaders in Europe.
The Egyptian accused the European nations of racism as she claimed that Ukraine had support from all corners in its war against Russia just because it has a majority of the white population. Meanwhile, Palestine continues to suffer in its war against Israel but no one seems to care.
I believe there is no solution, the great leaders of the world are blind or prefer to be blindfolded. What can we do? With the war in Ukraine, the whole world turned against Putin, because the people attacked were Ukrainians, people with blond hair and blue eyes, Europeans. Why isn't the same thing happening today?Mayar Sherif claimed. (H/T: We Love Tennis)
Is Mayar Sherif right in her claims?
With Mayar Sherif bringing out this debate over European countries’ bias for Ukraine, it becomes necessary to analyze how much she is right in her claims. Well, the Egyptian’s claims cannot be brushed aside as she seems to be holding a good argument.
While the European countries were prompt in putting sanctions on Russia over their invasion of Ukraine, no such action has been taken against Israel. Also, tennis federations across the globe banned Russian and Belarusian players over their country’s war against its neighbor but no such action has been announced against Israeli players yet.
While this is one side of the debate, the other side is that while Russia’s war with Ukraine was between two countries, the Israel-Palestine conflict is being projected as a fight between a country and a militant group- Hamas. Many of the pro-Israeli countries have pointed out the fact that Hamas first invaded Israel and attacked its citizens.
On the other hand, the pro-Palestine people have insisted on the historical conflict between the two countries. Tennis players like Ons Jabeur have asked people not to ignore history while taking sides. Amid all this, Mayar Sherif’s claims have provided an additional angle to this debate.
