After dethroning Andrey Rublev in the Dubai Open final: 6-2, 6-2, Former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev picks Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune as the successors to the legacy of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer. He was talking at the post-press conference after winning his third ATP title in as many weeks starting the streak from the Rotterdam Open.
As Medvedev said, “Yeah, I have to say Alcaraz is the best pick because he is the youngest No. 1 in world history. We have guys like Novak, Rafa, and Roger, and he beat this record where you kind of thought that there are no more records to beat at the moment. If you asked me, I need to pick him. Holger Rune is super young and has won already a Masters. Playing great also. I saw hum cramping today.”
The Former World No.1 continued on how he sees the future of Alcaraz, “I watched him in Buenos Aires, I didn’t see it in real. The way he hits the ball, it’s pure talent. You cannot really practice this. The power he has on the forehand. He can win a lot of things. But, as we saw, he can also lose sometimes. He can get injured. You never know how one career is going to go.”
He completed the question regarding the future of tennis stating, “Tennis is never easy. You never know how people’s careers is going to go. If I have to pick them two, they are the youngest and the highest ranked.“

Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune – career so far
The Spanish sensation had one of the best seasons ever by a teenager in tennis history last year. Carlos Alcaraz became World No. 1 at 19 years, 4 months, and 7 days, displacing Lleyton Hewitt‘s nearly 21-year-old record of being the youngest at 20 years, eight months, and 26 days. Apart from his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open 2022, Alcaraz collected four other titles in 2022, which include two Masters 1000 tournaments.
Holger Rune started his 2023 season by participating in the Adelaide International 1 tournament; however, he was knocked out in the first round. He then made his Australian Open debut. He reached the fourth round of this competition, however, could not beat Andrey Rublev. But he did win the hearts of many tennis fans as he went down fighting in a match that was decided in five sets. The scoreline read 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7(11)-6(9) in favor of the Russian.
The current World No.10 Holger Rune’s rise to the big scene was the breakthrough story last season. He won the 2022 Paris Masters tournament by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. Hence, there were great expectations from the young Dane. However, until now he has failed to play at the level he would have liked or had hoped for.
Alcaraz is now out of the competition with a hamstring injury suffered in the Rio Open final against Cameron Norrie. Holger Rune was in fine touch in the Acapulco Open but failed to márk his spot in the finals after losing to Alex De Minaur in the semi-final yesterday: 6-3, 5-7, 2-6.
