Mental challenges to keep Novak Djokovic out of all events prior to the 2022 Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic, the defending Wimbledon champion, has suffered huge setbacks in these few weeks. He lost in the quarterfinal of the French Open 2022 rather tamely to Rafael Nadal, and could not defend his title from 2021. Nadal won the French Open 2022 and posted a two grand slam lead on Djokovic. He is also set to lose the world number 1 position to Daniil Medvedev as the Championships is stripped of its ranking points.

Wimbledon has held the fort in terms of prize money so that it might give players enough incentive to still compete at the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in tennis. Djokovic looked mentally drained during his match against Nadal, something his coach was not happy about. So, It would be necessary for Novak to be back at Wimbledon with his usual self-belief if he is to defend his title in London.

Djokovic will not be participating in any grass-court events leading up to Wimbledon. After his quarterfinal loss, he spent several days in Belgrade and is now in Montenegro, taking a break and preparing for Wimbledon as he would fly directly to London for the event.

Novak’s coach Goran Ivanisevic had said in an interview with Sport Club: “Probably nothing (before Wimbledon). We’ll see, but now it’s time for him to recover mentally first. As I’ve said before, people like Novak are geniuses with a different way of thinking – they need a little time to come back and put things together in their heads, but it still takes time. Then that’s it, and he’s experienced disappointments before, I know he’ll be ready for grass,”

Novak will be out looking to win his 21st Grand Slam in London, a title he has achieved 6-times before. Djokovic would also try to work out the chink in his otherwise impenetrable armor and return back to his best on grass as it would be his last shot at a Grand Slam title in 2022, as he might not be permitted to participate in the US Open given his vaccination status.
