World No. 1 Alcaraz easily defeated Bagnis in the tournament opener with just two games lost, bringing his season record to 15-1. The Spanish prodigy has been in full form after a delayed season debut. In preparation for the Australian Open in Melbourne, Alcaraz had suffered from an injury during a practice session.

Surprisingly, Lajovic defeated Andy Murray in his opening match in Miami. He also shocked 30th seed Maxime Cressy with a straight-set win.
